Amazon: why the checkout price is higher than on the product page

Tax, shipping, Buy Box switches — the five causes and what you can do about them

Amazon: why the checkout price is higher than on the product page Cover Image

On the product page it says 45; at the last order step suddenly 51. That is no error and mostly not intent either, but the result of calculations Amazon can only run once delivery address, shipping method and seller are settled.

Five causes explain practically all cases. Whoever knows them sees on the final page immediately which one struck.

1. The tax follows the destination country

On amazon.co.uk you see prices with UK VAT, so 20 percent or reduced 5. As soon as a delivery address is fixed, the destination principle applies: decisive is the rate of the country being shipped to.

Since the EU reform of 2021 this holds for all larger merchants, Amazon included. Practically: the net stays equal, the gross shifts.

An example for a delivery into the EU:

  • Product page with 20 % UK VAT: £100.00
  • Net price: £83.33
  • Checkout with 21 % Spanish VAT: £100.83

83 pence more, purely through the tax correction.

More often it runs the other way — but not for you. Buying on amazon.it with 22 % Italian VAT and having it shipped to Spain, Amazon recalculates down. For EU residents crossing borders that usually means savings. For UK buyers the opposite logic applies: goods leave the EU as exports and arrive here as imports, where 20 percent import VAT plus courier fees land after purchase instead of any checkout adjustment.

2. Shipping costs only become fixed with the address

As long as no delivery address is stored, the product page works with assumptions. Mostly it assumes domestic shipping and, for Prime members, free delivery.

At checkout the system verifies the real address. If the item comes from a foreign warehouse or a minimum order value is unmet, delivery fees appear.

Two points are regularly overlooked. First, marketplace sellers set their own shipping rates, and international dispatch costs them often a multiple of domestic. Second, your Prime membership applies only in the store where you subscribed. On amazon.es you are an ordinary customer. The details stand in Amazon price comparison including shipping costs.

3. The Buy Box switches the seller

This is the least known cause and the one producing the biggest jumps.

For most articles multiple sellers offer the same product. Which offer sits behind the «Add to Basket» button Amazon decides automatically based on price, delivery time and seller rating. This selected offer is called the Buy Box.

The basket reserves nothing. It remembers the product, not the offer.

Here is the sequence:

  • On the product page, seller A offers a graphics tablet for £45.00 but has only one unit left.
  • You put it in the basket and wait ten minutes. Meanwhile someone else buys the last piece.
  • At checkout seller B steps in offering the same tablet for £51.00. Six pounds more without anything changing about your order.

Price is only half of it. With the seller change also shipping conditions, delivery time and return handling. If A ships via Amazon and B themselves, both Prime delivery and the contact for complaints change. Why that weighs more abroad stands in How to find products dispatched from and sold by Amazon.

Hence the value of looking at the seller name in the last step, not only at the sum.

4. Currency conversion outside the eurozone

On amazon.co.uk, amazon.pl or amazon.se prices stand in pounds, złoty or kronor. The pound amount Amazon displays beneath is orientation based on an indicative rate, never a promise.

At checkout you choose whether to pay in local currency or let Amazon convert. Amazon's rate contains a mark-up, which is why the final amount almost always deviates from the first estimate. Usually you do better paying in local currency and letting your card convert — provided it charges no high foreign transaction fee. The calculation stands in Amazon currency conversion.

5. Options you click yourself

A share of the difference arises within the ordering process. Express delivery, same-day drop-off or a chosen slot strike through onto the final price immediately.

Similar with subscribe-and-save. The discount on the product page presupposes you actually choose the subscription rather than the single purchase. The higher rebate tier additionally depends on how many subscribed items come together in the same consignment. One drops out — everyone's discount sinks.

What the price on the product page means legally

A price in an online shop is not yet a binding offer but an invitation to make one. The contract forms only when Amazon accepts the order, normally with the shipping confirmation. Hence the amount can change until the last step.

Binding is the final summary page immediately before «Buy Now». There Amazon lists separately merchandise value, tax plus shipping and packaging fees. Exactly this breakdown you should read before clicking, because it shows which of the five points above struck.

When the final price does not convince

If the amount exceeds expectations the purchase is not yet closed. Often the same article sits cheaper in another European Amazon store — even after shipping and tax correction. For UK buyers though, remember import charges then trim whatever remains.

Exactly this EuroSaver checks directly on the product page: prices of your activated stores, foreign currencies converted, estimated shipping included. It does not replace the look at the last checkout page but saves you the journey there for offers not worth it anyway. The first steps are explained by the welcome page, and how our approach differs from web-based services stands in EuroSaver vs. Hagglezon.

FAQ

Why does the price rise as soon as I enter my delivery address?

Mostly because of tax or shipping. Within the EU the destination country's rate applies. Sits it above the store's where you buy, the gross rises. Simultaneously only with the address can Amazon calculate what delivery actually costs.

Can the seller change by itself in the basket?

Yes. The basket reserves no specific offer. Once the original Buy Box offer sells out, automatically the next best seller steps in, often at another price with other shipping conditions.

Where do I see the binding final price?

On the checkout's last summary page, right before the order button. Only there are delivery address, tax rate, seller and shipping method fully considered.

Can the price at checkout also fall?

Rarely for UK buyers. Within the EU, orders from higher-VAT countries get corrected downwards at their destination — but goods coming into the UK carry import charges afterwards instead. From lower-VAT stores inside the EU, EU buyers see rises where UK buyers later see import bills.

Must I pay if the price rose at checkout?

No. Until the order is sent no obligation exists. You can cancel any time, leave the article in the basket or look at another store.
