Which categories are worth it
Amazon Echo and Fire TV

Philips Hue and other smart lighting

Why prices diverge so widely
Amazon steers each marketplace autonomously. When a big Spanish electronics retailer launches a thermostat promotion amazon.es follows. Nothing moves elsewhere because no comparable pressure exists there.

Shipping, tax and plugs
Shipping costs for standard parcels within the EU usually sit between £4 and £8 and apply per order, not per article. Taxes work against UK buyers differently than EU neighbours: goods arriving from EU stores carry 20 percent import VAT plus courier fees after purchase, so foreign sticker savings shrink on arrival.

Zigbee and Matter operate on the same frequencies across Europe; no problems there. For devices with cellular connectivity or proprietary radio protocols it pays to check the technical data whether the model is certified for the UK market.
Counting the return
UK purchases fall under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Goods bought from EU-based sellers follow that seller's national implementation of EU consumer law instead; enforcement can take longer if something goes wrong.
