Buying a PS5, Xbox or Switch abroad: when it really pays off
Where consoles, controllers and games cost less in Europe — and where the maths flips

Consoles, controllers and games carry different prices across the European Amazon stores, and the gaps exceed those of many other categories. On accessories double-digit percentages are common; on consoles the range sits more around £30 to £50.
Technically there are few obstacles. Hardware and media are identical within the EU. Still, three points can flip the calculation: shipping costs, digital content, and the fact that every EU store is now a third country for UK buyers. All figures in this text are worked examples showing the mechanics, not today's prices.
Why gaming prices diverge so much across Europe
The European gaming market is fiercely contested, and Amazon reacts in each country to local competition. When a big Spanish electronics retailer launches a promotion, amazon.es follows within hours. Meanwhile nothing moves on other stores because a different competitor holds sway there. We have broken down the structural reasons in Why Amazon prices differ across European stores.
For imports there are hardly any technical hurdles. A PS5 bought in Spain is identical to the UK model; you switch the system language at first boot, and power cables are the same across the EU.
With physical games the language version matters. Big publishers mostly ship multi-language versions with English text already on the disc or cartridge, even if the sleeve carries Spanish printing. The ASIN helps only partly: Amazon keeps a largely common catalogue across Europe, so the same number usually stands for the same goods but says nothing about included languages. With country-specific editions and bundles the ASIN can even differ. Reliable is only the «Language» section in each store's product details.
Where discounts run deepest: accessories beat consoles
Console prices are transparent and watched closely by buyers; accordingly the differences stay moderate. On accessories the range is wider, because Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo rarely enforce uniform European price floors there.
Controllers and gamepads are the classic case. A DualSense costs about £55 here. During promo weeks on amazon.fr or amazon.it the same model sometimes slides down to £43 (49.99 €). Even after shipping something remains.
Storage swings daily because semiconductor prices are volatile by nature. NVMe SSDs for the PS5 and fast microSD Express cards for the Switch are sought after; whoever watches amazon.es and amazon.de too catches price drops earlier.
Headsets and keyboards follow their own discount cycles in southern Europe tied to local holidays. What is permanently listed at premium price here can sit clearly below that in Italy during a promo week.

How much difference a complete setup makes
A worked example for a typical starter package: console, second controller and one current game at full price.
On amazon.co.uk: console £479.99, controller £54.99, game £59.99. Total £594.97.
Spread across neighbours: console on amazon.es for 499.00 € (about £426), controller on amazon.it for 55.00 € (about £47), game on amazon.de for 59.99 € (about £51). Total about £524 before charges.
Difference before shipping: about £71. The catch sits in the three separate deliveries, because shipping applies per order, not per basket. Three parcels from three countries quickly eat £40 of that. Then import VAT of 20 percent plus courier fees land on top of everything arriving from the EU. The calculation can still come out positive on big-ticket items, but far tighter than the headline gap suggests — and only worth pursuing when the gap is genuinely large.
Shipping, tax and delivery time
Amazon calculates cross-border shipping as a flat base fee plus a weight component. For a game from Spain expect usually £4–7; for a console rather £15 and up. How strongly shipping can tip an apparent best price we work through in Amazon price comparison including shipping costs.
On taxes, remember the UK position: no EU checkout adjustment applies. Goods leave the EU store as exports and arrive as imports — 20 percent import VAT plus courier clearance fees, with customs duties possible above £135.
Delivery times have become unremarkable. Two to four working days are common from France, the Netherlands or Poland; rarely more than five from Spain and Italy. Tracking runs through your normal Amazon account.
EU stores: usually the worse calculation
Since Brexit, every EU Amazon store is effectively a third country for UK buyers, which changes the calculation fundamentally.
On top of the product value comes 20 percent import VAT regardless of order size. Above £135 customs duties may apply depending on category. Amazon normally collects these import charges as prepayment directly at checkout, so nobody gets a demand at the door. For expensive hardware that sum almost always eats the price advantage. On games and light accessories the detour can occasionally pay.
Then there is the exchange rate. If Amazon offers to bill you in pounds, that is a conversion at Amazon's own rate. You usually do better paying in EUR and letting your card convert, provided it does not charge a high foreign transaction fee. What exactly happens then is explained in Amazon currency conversion.
The mains plug is less of a problem than often claimed. PS5 and Xbox Series use detachable figure-8 or C5 cables; a suitable cable with a UK plug costs a few pounds. No travel adapter needed.
Scarce stock: look for «Dispatched from and sold by Amazon»
At console launches and limited controller editions the marketplace regularly fills with third-party sellers asking well above list price. In a foreign store this is harder to spot, because the reference price is missing.
Check therefore that the offer field reads «Dispatched from and sold by Amazon». That secures not only the regular price but also a clear point of contact in case of complaint: your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply to UK purchases, while for EU purchases you deal with Amazon EU S.à r.l. rather than a seller whose return terms you would have to translate first. How to activate this filter right in the Amazon search we show in How to find products dispatched from and sold by Amazon.
Checking six stores at once without six tabs
The price of a controller changes faster than you can click through six Amazon pages. By the time shipping and currency are compared the deal is often over.
EuroSaver takes over that part. The free extension checks all activated stores in the background as soon as you open a product page, converts currencies and includes estimated shipping. An account is not needed. How the comparison works is described in Amazon EU price comparison, and which 22 stores are supported lists All Amazon marketplaces at a glance.

When the comparison pays off for you
On accessories almost always. Controllers, headsets and storage show the widest ranges and the lowest shipping: that is the most reliable corner. On consoles it is worth it when you are waiting for an offer anyway and the difference reaches three digits in euros. Orders from EU stores must be calculated very precisely; most of the time the answer is to buy domestically and let import charges be someone else's problem.
Install EuroSaver and see with your next controller what a glance towards Spain brings.
FAQ
Can I sign in to other stores with my usual account?
Yes. Your credentials work on amazon.de, amazon.fr, amazon.it, amazon.nl and the other European stores, including saved addresses and payment methods. On those sites occasional reconfirmation may be needed.
Do foreign PS5, Xbox or Switch games run on my console?
Yes. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch have no region lock on physical games. A disc bought in Spain runs on your console, and if English text is on the medium the game sets itself up automatically.
Does that apply to download codes and gift cards too?
No, and that is the most important difference. Digital content is tied to the store's account. PSN, Xbox and Nintendo gift cards from Spain or Germany cannot be redeemed on a UK account. The same applies to DLC codes attached to some retail editions. For digital products the comparison therefore serves no purpose.
How does warranty work for a console from abroad?
UK purchases fall under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Goods bought from EU-based sellers follow that seller's national implementation of EU consumer law instead; enforcement can take longer if something goes wrong. With «Dispatched from and sold by Amazon» the counterparty is Amazon EU S.à r.l. wherever you bought. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo add manufacturer warranties which generally apply across Europe.
Will I get an invoice in English?
The invoice arrives in the language of the respective store. As proof of purchase for warranty claims it is valid throughout Europe; no translation needed.
